What is a Lip Lift/Lip Reduction?
A lip lift is a cosmetic procedure that is performed to correct an appearance of a thin or “long” upper lip caused by an elongated philtrum (the grooved area between the base of the nose and the border of the upper lip). During a lip lift, Dr. Sethna raises the upper lip up towards the nose. Think of it as gently curling the lip upwards in order to create a more youthful appearance. Dr. Sethna also offers a non-surgical lip flip that involves Botox®️ injections to help curl the lip upwards and outwards.
A lip reduction is performed to decrease volume within the upper and/or lower lip. This procedure is intended for women or men who are unhappy with the naturally larger size of their lips, or for those who underwent a previous permanent lip augmentation surgery (ie: silicone implants or certain fillers) and are no longer happy with their results.
Dr. Sethna can also perform a lip enhancement procedure using hyaluronic acid based fillers like Voluma or Silk. This type of lip augmentation is non-surgical and can provide long-lasting results with regular treatment sessions.
What is the Lip Lift/Lip Reduction Procedure Like?
You will have a private consultation with Dr. Sethna to discuss your specific concerns as well as your goal outcome. Based on your unique circumstances, Dr. Sethna will customize a procedure plan designed to provide you with your optimal and most natural-looking outcome. She will also provide you with detailed instructions for both before and after your surgery.
A lip lift is performed by carefully repositioning the upper lip and raising the vermillion (the upper lip border) towards the nose. Dr. Sethna will use techniques using small incisions to lift the lip and create a naturally youthful pout.
Lip reduction surgery is performed by making a horizontal incision in the upper and/or lower lip. From there, Dr. Sethna can carefully remove excess tissue or a previously inserted implant to reduce volume and achieve your desired look.
What’s Recovery Like After a Lip Lift or Lip Reduction?
In most cases, you should feel well enough to return to work in as little as 1-2 days after your lip lift or lip reduction. Some swelling and mild discomfort is to be expected and typically peaks around 1-3 days with a lip lift, and 3-4 days with lip reduction surgery.

The results of your lip lift or reduction will be immediately noticeable. In both cases, you may experience some swelling and moderate discomfort during the first few days after your surgery. However, your lips will continue to heal over the first couple weeks, revealing your final results.
*While the results of your lip lift are permanent, this does not mean they are no longer susceptible to the normal effects of aging. However, the procedure will have you looking years younger than if you had not had the surgery, allowing you to look and feel your best at any age.
