Mohs Reconstruction in Buckhead and Atlanta

Mohs surgery is a skin cancer surgery that is used for the treatment of basal cell carcinomas (BCCs) and squamous cell carcinomas (SCCs) – two of the most common types of skin cancer. During this procedure, the area or areas of affected skin are removed in order to eliminate the cancerous cells. While the surgery is extremely effective in defeating skin cancer, after Mohs surgery, the treated area of skin can be an open wound. Dr. Sethna performs Mohs reconstruction in order to help her patients fully overcome skin cancer and restore healthy, natural-looking skin.

What is Mohs Reconstruction?

Mohs reconstructive surgery, or Mohs closure, is a procedure that is performed to renew the area of skin that was removed during an initial Mohs surgery. During this procedure, skin grafts are used to close or fill in areas that had been removed during the skin cancer removal. Board certified in facial plastic and reconstructive surgery, Dr. Sethna is an expert in restoring beautiful, healthy-looking skin after skin cancer.

Dr. Sethna can design a Mohs reconstruction procedure plan in order to restore areas of skin impacted by skin cancer removal surgery, including the:

  • Nose
  • Face
  • Forehead
  • Ears
  • Neck

In some cases, Dr. Sethna can work directly with your skin cancer surgeon, performing your reconstruction on the same day as the Mohs skin cancer removal surgery. This allows you to avoid any period where skin is left open as a result of the cancer treatment. Dr. Sethna will answer any questions you may have during your consultation.

What is the Mohs Reconstruction Procedure Like?

You will have a private consultation with Dr. Sethna to discuss your specific concerns as well as your goal outcome. Based on your unique circumstances, Dr. Sethna will customize a procedure plan designed to provide you with your optimal and most natural-looking outcome. She will also provide you with detailed instructions for both before and after your surgery.

The specific methods used for your Mohs reconstruction will vary depending on your unique circumstances. Dr. Sethna will assess your body for potential areas where donor skin can be taken for your procedure. This may consist of surrounding tissue (a local flap procedure), or skin from another area of the body (a skin graft procedure).

During your procedure, Dr. Sethna will artfully close the areas of skin removed during Mohs surgery using either a local flap or skin graft. Her expertise in reconstructive facial surgery allows her the ability to smoothly blend the skin with the surrounding area in order to achieve very natural and healthy-looking outcomes. Once incisions are closed, she will then apply any necessary dressings and bandages to assist with healing.

What’s Recovery Like After Mohs Reconstruction?

Recovery after Mohs reconstruction will vary depending on your specific circumstances. For example, surgeries performed using a skin graft rather than local flaps may require a bit more downtime. Dr. Sethna will provide you with detailed care instructions to assist with the healing process.
